Renewal and Wedding AnniversariesMany couples, celebrating their wedding anniversary, will consider renewing their wedding vows as part of the celebration. When they do, they adapt the traditional motif of the particular wedding anniversary. Each wedding anniversary is symbolised by a gift which in part explains the stage at which the marriage happens to be. For example, for the first wedding anniversary the symbolism is that of paper, indicating that the marriage is still in its fragile state, not the substantial union it is at the fiftieth wedding anniversary represented by gold. Anniversary celebrations began in medieval times when people celebrated 25 and 50 years of marriage. A husband would crown his wife with a wreath of silver for 25 years and of gold for 50. The traditional wedding anniversary celebrations have been augmented by the more modern additions. Each represents a different facet of the couple's commitment, the stage their relationship is at and the number of years they have been together. While many of the later anniversary gifts are symbolised by expensive gems, the celebration itself can include the colour rather than the gem itself. For example, instead of rubies for a ruby wedding anniversary, there is red wine or some coloured glass or pottery. Here is a list of anniversaries, how to celebrate them and their meaning. |
