Wedding Ceremony Symbolism of Candle Lighting

Lighting an Unity Candle is one the symbolic rituals that many couples like to include in their wedding ceremony. When the action includes the couple only, it symbolises the union which is taking place between the bride and groom.

Where a baby naming ceremony is a part of the wedding ceremony, a special candle, with the baby's picture is part of the candle lighting ceremony.

Many brides and grooms will also purchase a special candle for themselves that includes their names, the date of their wedding, and possibly even add their photograph. They then keep  this candle to light on their wedding anniversaries.

Within the wedding ceremony a couple may choose to commemorate the memory of either absent friends, or deceased relatives, by lighting a candle for them.

Most often this happens just before the wedding ceremony begins. The celebrant explains what is going to happen, and then either the bride or groom, or perhaps the two together, will light a memory candle.

When the parents of the bride and groom are part of the wedding ceremony, three candles are used.
Two smaller ones representing the parents of the bride and groom, and one larger one, representing the bride and groom.

All sorts of candles are used for the candle lighting ceremony, but usually they are large enough to be seen by all the wedding guests.

In an outdoor ceremony, ensure that the candles are protected either by being placed in a deep glass receptacle, or in a lantern designed for outdoor lighting.

If the bride and groom have a baby whom they want to mention during the wedding ceremony, they might use two candles representing themselves, one candle representing the baby and future children, and one candle representing the parents of the bride and groom.

The symbolism of the candle lighting is the present, the future, and the past from which the present has originated.

Although candle lighting is most successful indoors, when a bride and groom are planning an outdoor wedding ceremony but still want to enact a candle lighting ceremony, they buy protected candles which will stay lit out of doors.
