Wedding Ceremony Handfasting Tying of Hands

For a marriage ceremony to be legal, there are few simple requirements. After that, a couple may create a wedding ceremony that is both personal and unique.

Handfasting is a visual symbol that adds to the ceremonial aspects of the wedding ceremony, especially when it is enacted slowly and with dignity.

While the celebrant is often the central figure in this part of the ceremony, couples can also involve either friends or relatives, or the bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Here is a sample taken out of my Wedding Ceremony Resource Book.

Tying of the Hands
Celebrant:
(Bride) and (Groom), since your lives have crossed in this life, you have formed ties between each other. As you enter this state of matrimony, you should strive to make real the ideals that give meaning both to this ceremony and the institution of marriage.

With full awareness, know that within this circle, you are not only declaring to be handfasted before your family and friends, but you speak that intent also to your creative higher powers.

In binding yourself together in this life, you must first understand the cycle of life, for it is the strands forming the patterns of life which do the binding.

(WHITE)
Here is the white strand of life. It is newness and beginnings, purity and innocence. The Maiden - the Childhood. All things have a youth. Cherish the youth of your bodies and relationships, understanding that they will change as time passes. Whether those changes are for the better or for the worse, is up to you.

(RED)
Here is the red strand of life. It is progress and fertility, strength and determination. The Mother - Maturity. All things mature in time. Cherish the fullness of life, and the achievements for which you work so hard, understanding that the road to maturity has many twists and turns. Whether you like to dislike the person you are when you reach the summit, is up to you.

(BLACK)
Here is the black strand of life. It is age and entropy, wisdom and experience. The Crone - Death. All things age and die. Cherish the hard-won knowledge and memories of your journey through time, understanding that they are keys to the universe. Whether you decide to use them to make the world a better place, is up to you.

(GREEN)
Here is the green strand of life. It is action and interaction, communication and generosity. The Horned One - Partnership. All things interact with their surroundings. Cherish the dance of your similarities and differences, understanding that as you each and both grow and change, so will your dances. Whether your dance continues to bring you joy, is up to you.

(BROWN/BLUE/YELLOW)
And finally the three strands of the physical world together as one, binding their lives in reality.

Here is the brown strand of life. It is the earth.

Here is the blue strand of life. It is the waters.

Here is the yellow strand of life. It is the sun.

These are the foundations of life, from which all life springs and on which all life is dependant.
