Wedding Ceremony Legal Requirements

For a marriage ceremony to be legal, there are few simple requirements.

In terms of the words that must be said, this includes certain words that the Marriage Celebrant must say, and the wording of the vows which the bride and groom must say to each other in front of two witnesses 18 years of age or over.

Celebrant:
My name is (Celebrant), and I am authorised by law to solemnize marriage according to law.

(Bride and Groom), before you are joined in my presence, and in the presence of these witnesses,  I am asked to remind you both of the solemn and binding nature of the relationship into which you now about to enter.

Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of a man and a woman, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.

Groom:
I, (Groom), call upon the persons here present, to witness, that I take you, (Bride), to be my lawful, wedded wife.

Bride:
I, (Bride), call upon all here present, to witness that I take you, (Groom), to be my lawful, wedded husband.
