Groom's Name Change after Marriage

Although not a common practice, now and then the groom will decide to change his surname to that of the bride.

Normally to change her name on such documents as

  • drivers licence

  • car registration

  • passport

  • bank accounts

  • Medicare

  • private health fund

  • insurance policies

  • superannuation

  • electoral enrolement

  • memberships

  • store accounts

all that the bride needs do is to approach the various people using her wedding certificate as proof of her status as a married person.

Although by rights, the groom, when changing his surname to hers, should be able to do the same, the concept is so new that many of those approached, will not be aware of this.

Consequently, the groom may have less trouble by having his name changed through the legal process of name change.

If, like the bride, he decides to use the hyphenated name of his own name and that of the bride, then he will need to make an application to the Registry of Births, Deaths for a legal change of name.
