To marry in Australia, you must satisfy certain legal requirements.

1. You must be 18 years or over.

2. You don't need to be an Australian resident, and there is no minimum time you need to be in Australia before your marriage can take place.

3. You must provide birth certificates if you were born in Australia. You can produce either a birth certificate or an overseas passport if you were born  overseas. 

4. For those previously married, you must show how the last marriage ended (divorce/death certificate) All necessary documents must be sighted before the marriage takes place, though not necessarily when you lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage. For lost, or unavailable documents, look here

5. You must give at least one month and one day notice at the time of lodging the "Notice of Intended Marriage". The form is valid for 18 months. You may download the form here. Notice of Intended Marriage

6. Your marriage will be registered with the Department of Births, Deaths and Marriages within 14 days of your marriage, and will be recognised both by Australian Government and overseas.

7. At the wedding itself, you must have two witnesses over eighteen years of age.

8. At the end of the wedding ceremony you will be given a Marriage Certificate issued by the Australian Government.
